Brunch with Lori – The Funkadelic

Happy Wednesday Brunch Lovers and welcome to another Brunch with Lori post.Β I hope everyone is having a great week so far, we are halfway to the weekend πŸ™‚

A while back while visiting Austin for one of the many times, I went to brunch with some of my girlfriends at The Funkadelic. I found out about this place through Yelp, seriously the BEST app for all foodies! There is so much you can do on the app but that is a whole other blog posts worth. The name The Funkadelic was what caught my attention first and foremost but once I looked at pictures of the food I knew we had to check it out!

When we arrived at The Funkadelic, there was a line outside the door so I got a little nervous because we were all already so hungry and also still had to drive back home after we ate. Once we got out of the car we realized the long line was to order and not people waiting for a table so we decided to stay in line. While we waited, there was a worker outside talking to customers and handing out menu’s for us to look at while we waiting to order inside. There were a lot of local people in line along with someΒ  Austin visitors, like us. The restaurant is not very big so tables fill up fast after you order your food but the workers are very accommodating to finding you a table in a timely manner. They also do have additional seating at the Stouthaus Coffee Pub right next door.

The Funkadelic is located on South Lamar Blvd in Sunset Valley, TX which is in South Austin, TX. They serve brunch 7 days a week from 7:30am-3:30pm. Their slogan is “Brunch for the Masses”. One thing I also learned about them is that they offer cooking classes several times a month! If you live in Austin, I would definitely check out theirΒ  cooking classes!

Their menu allows you to try different kinds of international brunch comfort cuisines, ranging from Migas, Pupusas, and of course, your traditional pancakes and waffles with their own little flare. One thing I love about this restaurant and many other Austin eateries is that they use ingredients from local farms and vendors and everything is made from scratch. They have gluten free options as well as vegan and vegetarian options. You can also eat there or order to go.

I ordered the Braised Citrus Pork Carnitas with a pancake on the side. Let me tell you, these carnitas were probably the best I have ever had! They had the perfect hint of lime and all the ingredients flowed so well together and tasted so good! The tacos were stuffed to the max and so filling, I barley had enough room to eat the pancake especially because it was so big but it so delicious, as well!

My friends and I got the Bison Quesadillas to share, yummy!

My friends and I all got something different andΒ  of course had to go around trying each others! We also tried the Chips & Queso,Β  The Hash Scramble & Miguelito’s Pupusas (not pictured).Β  We were SO satisfied and happy with everything we ordered and how amazing the food was! All the workers were so nice and friendly as well, while waiting in line, many gave us suggestions on what items they liked and what were their favorites. Another thing I also loved about the Funkadelic is that the owners were working in the restaurant and helping out with anything they need to keep the busy brunch rush running smoothly. The owner and his wife even came by our table and brought us all of our food after putting the finishing garnish touchings on each plate. I feel like you really don’t see owners present at restaurants so that was really nice to see. I truly loved the atmosphere and everything about this place! I definitely want to stop by again the next time I’m in Austin to try more items from the menu! I 100% recommend this place and hope everyone gets to try it if you live in Austin or are just visiting, be sure to add it to your list!

I had a long weekend in Austin, filled with many fun activities and wanted to wear something comfortable to brunch so I went with this outfit pictured above. I found this cute red and white striped skort, yes you read that right, skort (I haven’t worn one since I was a little girl) at Forever 21 and knew I had to get it! I paired it with a black off shoulder body suit that I also got at Forever 21 and some black strappy sandals that I got at Target. Perfect, cute but comfortable brunch outfit!

Thank you for following along with me on my brunch journey!

The Art of Ice Cream Experience

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! ~ Okay that was super cheesy, but I’ll tell you what wasn’t – my experience at The Art of Ice Cream in Austin, Texas.

The Art of Ice Cream is an instagramable playground filled with rooms themed of all things – you guessed it – Ice Cream. Who doesn’t love that?

I had seen advertisements for this place on Instagram and knew I needed to make a trip there the next time I was in Austin, and I do not regret it!

There were backdrops for banana splits, popsicle paradise, a milkshake wall, and so much more.

I had been to a place similar to this here, in San Antonio but I must say the people who run The Art of Ice Cream really know what their visitors want. The workers were so interactive with us by being our photographers as well as suggesting different fun ways we could take our pictures/ boomerangs and different poses we could do – which is literally a MUST because you got to take good content for the gram!

The Art of Ice Cream consisted of three large rooms with different backdrops on pretty much every wall. Once you buy your tickets ($25/ each for adults) and select your reservation time you get the tickets downloaded onto your phone and then just show up! They do things in 15 minute intervals and they put you in with your reservation group to go through the experience together. Luckily mine was a small group of people probably because I went in the evening time on a Sunday – Talk about Sunday Funday!

I was blown away because right when you enter the building you are greeted with a popsicle and then the fun begins! You’re allowed to spend 15 minutes in a room at a time, with your group. I was a little worried that our group members would get in the way of our shots and photobomb us but that was not the case at all, the rooms were big enough and there are multiple back drops that keep everyone busy that everyone just went around taking turns with the different backdrops at a time.

ALL the items in the rooms are interactive meaning you can touch the art, move it around, and use it as props. I took so many boomerangs that I wish I could include in this post!

The timings of the rooms are: 15 minutes, 15 minutes, and then 20 minute and the workers aren’t very pushy about when your time is up either. In the third room you have more time because that is the last room in the experience but also… DRUMROLL.. you get more ice cream! You can choose what flavor ice cream you want and they give you a small cup with whatever flavor you choose! You can interact and get to know your group members or just finish taking pictures, eat your ice cream, and leave.

I was a little discouraged when I saw the price of each ticket to visit this exhibit but I honestly had so much fun here and honestly felt like a little kid again, I definitely recommend people go here! You 100% get your moneys worth out of this visit! – Not just because of the really fun/ cool pictures you get to it but also because it truly is, an experience! I can’t tell you how surprised I still am that they even thought of giving us ice cream to make the experience that much better and unique! I am so happy I found out about them and also so happy they decided to make our capital in Texas as a spot to visit! Be sure to reserve your visit before they leave Austin, the exhibit is only in Austin for a limited time!

Outfit Inspo:
I wanted to go with a very simple outfit because I knew, from looking at pictures that the experience was very colorful and I didn’t want to wear anything that clashed with the backdrops and walls.

Outfit details: Jumper – Charlotte Russe, Shoes – BP, Necklace & Earrings- Kendra Scott, Watch – JORD Watches.

6th Street – Do’s and Dont’s

Good morning!

Last Saturday I celebrated my 21st birthday in Austin on the legendary 6th street after a long day of spending time exploring with my friends. We started getting ready around 10ish and took an Uber down to 6th street around 11, the bars closed at 2 am so it was more than enough time to spend down there. It was my first time being on 6th street and I wasn’t to sure what to expect so I decided to write about the Do’s and Dont’s on 6th street.

Do’s:

  • Wear something you’re comfortable in – I wore a skirt, a crop top, and comfortable pumps because I’m used to wearing heels so I was completely comfortable with what I was wearing but girls who aren’t normally comfortable in heels, DON’T wear them.
  • Go with friends you trust completely – 6th street is known for bars and drinking so be sure you are with good friends and people you trust so they can watch out for you and take care of you if necessary.
  • Eat a good meal before you start drinking – drinking on an empty stomach will only get you drunk way faster and make you feel sick at the end of the night.
  • Wear a sash, tiara, or button saying you’re the birthday girl so that the bars will see it and give you or you and your friends free drinks
  • Try to go to as many bars as possible, just to be able to experience them
  • Stay hydrated – Drink lots and lots of water, the day before and the day of!
  • Don’t pre-game before going out – if you don’t want to be that sloppy drunk person then I recommend not pre-gaming before because the you’ll already be drunk by the time you get downtown.
  • Take lots of pictures and videos – Just in case you don’t remember what happened the next day, you will be able to see pictures and videos that captured significant moments
  • Put an Advil, water, and a trash can by your bed – I had my first hang over the morning after my evening on 6th but having the medicine and water right by my bed in the morning helped it go away faster.

Dont’s:

  • Accept drinks from guys or any strangers if you didn’t see them buying them physically – accepting drinks from strangers is very dangerous because they can easily sneak stuff in your drink to take advantage of you
  • Drive yourself, take an uber – Lets face it, nobody likes to be the DD especially if they are the only sober person out of the whole group. Solve this problem and take an Uber so that everybody can enjoy and have fun, Ubers are a lot cheaper than taxi’s too so its a win, win.
  • Stay in Austin for the night, if you don’t live there already – if you have a friend you can stay the night with, do it, or book a hotel room with enough time in advance to stay the evening you plan on going. You and everybody in your group are going to be too drunk and too sleepy to drive back home
  • Lose the group you are with – 6th street is super crowded, no matter what time you go. Make sure you stick with them at all times because there are so many bars and so many people that you can separate from them very quickly and then you have to play phone tag trying to find each other which is hard enough sober, but even worse drunk.
  • Lose your personal belongings – before the night starts tell your best friend or boyfriend to keep an eye on your purse and phone throughout the night because you are going to need the things in your purse and your phone the next day

All these do’s and dont’s apply if you’re going bar hopping or out drinking anywhere, always be safe but enjoy yourself and have a good time!

Hope everyone is doing well! Follow me on social media at @itsxoxoloriallison to keep up with what I’m doing when I’m not blogging!

21st Birthday

Hello and happy Thursday lovlies! What has changed about me since I’ve last posted? I am officially 21, wahooo! πŸ™‚

Yesterday was my 21st birthday and I can’t believe how fast it came! It feels like just yesterday I graduated high school and it was really 3 years ago.. how time flies!

Right at midnight I went to a bar close to home and brought in my 21st with all my best friends, my sister, and my boyfriend! I couldn’t have asked for a better group of friends, boyfriend, or sister to spend it with because it was absolutely amazing! I had such a great time!

IMG_8269 I was greeted at midnight by my boyfriend with my favorite flowers ❀

Of course I took wayy too many shots but that’s how your 21st birthday should be because you’re officially legal and you deserve to celebrate!

My sister and I

I woke up on my actual birth Day with a little hangover but I didn’t let it stop me from starting my day off right and having a great day!

I started it by going to lunch with my co-workers at 11 at the Cheesecake Factory, enjoyed a nice lunch, a pina colada, and a birthday cheesecake which was delicious!

After my sister and I went exploring downtown around the Pearl Brewery which is a cool trendy place with different boutiques, restaurants, an ice cream shop, a coffee shop, and a bakery with lots of yummy macaroons, sandwiches, and pastries.

I had never tried Macaroons before and was eager to try them so we stopped in Bakery Lorraine and I got a pistachio one and an earl grey. The pistachio one was super delicious and the earl grey was little different.. it tasted literally like fruit loops cereal with milk, it was very unique! lol

After we went to check out Local Coffee which is this super cute and trendy coffee place only here in San Antonio

My cousins work at a restaurant and brewery called Southerleigh and its really awesome because the restaurant is down on the bottom and at the top they have the brewery. We were able to take a tour of the brewery and learn all about how they make the beer they serve which was awesome!

Later on once my dad got off of work we went to go eat at Carrabbas Italian Restaurant and after dinner they sang to me and brought out this delicious ice cream dessert with honey and candy almonds

IMG_8293

Then once we were done with dinner my boyfriend and I went back to his house so we could celebrate with his family. They made me an amazing cake and gave me my gifts.

His mom got me workout gear since we are always working out and my boyfriend got me a little stuffed lion because we are obsessed with them, they are our favorite animals besides dogs lol. He also surprised me with tickets to the J.Cole concert in Austin coming up next month on the 22nd.

Just a little about me, J.Cole is my all time favorite rapper I first saw him perform in October of 2014 with my friends in Austin and I also met him too because I bought the meet & greet tickets. He was honestly the most humble artist I’ve ever met and he really took the time to talk to me and get to know me for about 5 minutes..I fell in love ❀ lol. The second time I saw him was this past May when he came to San Antonio, my friend and I literally camped out starting at 8am that morning to be front row during his concert like we were for his concert in Austin even though his concert didn’t start until 7 pm lol we are die hard fans but he deserves it for being the kind, humble man he is.

Soo, yes it was a huge deal for my boyfriend to get me tickets to see him again and its the weekend right after I start school so it’ll definitely be a nice little get away before going back to school for a whole 5 months!

The celebration isn’t over yet!

I am sooo excited for this weekend my boyfriend, my friends, and some of my sorority sisters are going to Austin, Texas to go celebrate my birthday down on 6th street (The entertainment district), which if you haven’t heard is the place to turn up lol there are a bunch of bars all down the street and its going to be so much fun! If you’ve heard of SXSW which I hope you have, a lot of the artists go perform at different venues down 6th. Aside from that we are going to adventure Saturday during the day and then Sunday before we leave to go back home.

I’m so ready for this exciting weekend and I will definitely share with you my experiences when I come back and recover from the weekend lmao
