The Benefits of Being Selfish In Your Twenty-Somethings

Your twenties are a time to be selfish. They are a time to do what makes you happy, make your own choices/decisions, and really find out who you are. A little over a year ago, I was a recent college graduate and boy, did life came at me fast. All of a sudden it was time to officially be an adult and figure out what the next step in my life would be.
Although graduating college was a huge accomplishment, I felt lost and like I really didn’t know who I was. I knew that I needed a change and for once in my life, I had all the time in the world. My time as an undergrad student was a busy one –  balancing being a full time student, working part time, being in multiple organizations while holding important positions in them, and trying to balance having a good social life and good family life. Now was a better time than ever to take a chance and do something that made me happy. Like I mentioned in a previous blog post – my junior year of college I decided to accept an internship with Disney in Orlando, Florida. My parents had taken my sister and I to Disney World many times when we were little. It was truly one of my happy places. I figured why not go one last time – have fun, make new memories and just enjoy the moment one last time before committing to full time adult life.

So, I did exactly that. I packed my stuff up and moved halfway across the U.S. to basically get my shit together, but at the same time – have fun, experience new things, and really live in the moment. Looking back at it now, moving back to Orlando is one of the best decisions I have ever made and my four months there really impacted the person I am today.

When I moved to Florida, I was definitely in a time of change – I had lost important people in my life through failed friendships/relationships, I was no longer a student for the first time in 16 years, and I had moved over 1,000 miles away from my family, my friends, and everything I knew. This move truly felt like a new beginning and a fresh start for me.

These are the benefits that I gained from being selfish in my twenties:

  • Finding myself – being on your own in a place that is not your home & where you have no family really teaches you to depend on yourself more than ever. My first few months in Florida I started to take chances, go on adventures, do things by myself and out of my comfort zone. In the midst of living in the moment, I was learning more and more about myself. I also was able to learn more about myself through strangers who became friends, it’s amazing what you can learn about yourself from other people. People who don’t know you that well, and people who do. I also realized how important it is to ask yourself questions – when you react certain ways, ask yourself why you reacted that way. Learn what things you love and what things you don’t love. Let your social interactions teach you about yourself and also turn to your family for advice and reflection.
  • Growth – it is very important for me as an individual, to be someone who is constantly evolving and flourishing. I am not the type of person who is okay staying in the same place forever and not taking on new opportunities or chances. There are going to be times and situations in life that will push you out of your comfort zone – do them anyways! Although you may not like going through those experiences, at the moment, you will eventually look back and notice how they have changed you – for the better. Be open minded and really try to learn from your experiences.
  • New friendships – during my time at Disney, I met so many people from all over the world and when I say all over the world –  I really mean it. I have friends here in the U.S. of course, spread out in different states – but I also have friends in different countries (Japan, New Zealand, Australia, England). I think it is so amazing to be given the opportunity to meet and form friendships with people from all around the world and also know that I have a friend to visit in those places. Meeting people from different countries is so amazing because I feel like it can be a learning experience such as with language barriers or having different cultural norms. I believe that cultural awareness is important and really opens your eyes about the way other people live and things they believe. At the end of the day, love and friendship is a common communication that everyone understands and forming new friendships is such a wonderful thing.
  • Reflection – moving somewhere new and not knowing many people(at first) means that you’ll spend a good amount of time alone: voluntarily or nonvoluntarily, it will happen. Spending time alone is very important – everybody needs alone time every once in a while, although not everyone likes being alone. When you are alone – you are able to reflect on previous experiences in life and can truly be alone with your thoughts. Although many of us try to be the best person we can be – we unfortunately aren’t always going to do or say the right things all the time. We are human and we are not perfect beings. You are going to lose friendships/relationships and we may hurt people we may have never had the intention of hurting.. things happen. As long as we can reflect on these situations, put things into perspective, and acknowledge our pasts – we still have the ability to change the outcome from what it previously was. It is important to reflect back on situations and feel the emotions again, whether they are good or bad and it is important to give yourself the ability to feel & be present. Forgive people for hurting you and forgive yourself from hurting other people. You cannot let past experiences eat away at you because they will hold you back from growing.

It’s crazy for me to think that in just four short months, I was able to rebuild myself and become a person I had always imagined I could be. Although being away from my family and not being able to see them everyday was tough, I feel like moving away was just what I needed. In January I moved back to Texas feeling happy, free, and confident in myself. I no longer felt scared of the unknown or lost because I knew that anywhere I ended up, I would be okay and that I was strong enough to handle anything that came my way.

Now a year later, I am honestly, living my best life, literally. I have a great job with an amazing organization, I am back in the love and care of my family, and I am overall in a really amazing place.

I encourage anybody who is feeling lost or unsure of their path in life to take a chance and don’t think twice about it. As cliché as it sounds, you only live once. Don’t you want to make it a happy and good life? Do what makes you happy or what makes you scared, just don’t be afraid to feel and take chances. The best things come when you least expect it, and usually have the best outcomes. You don’t have to move to a completely different state like me, start by doing little things like traveling and going on little trips to different places on your bucket list or get that dog you’ve always been wanting – the possibilities are endless.

Never be afraid to be selfish – not just in your twenties but in life because ultimately you know what is best for yourself.

I am ultimately grateful for you Disney ❤

Texas Pride, San Antonio Fashion

Texas is a great, big state with a lot to offer! Among the sites to see, food to eat, and events to attend, we also have a variety of styles! Today I’m pleased to share with you two fellow Texans that are also my fashion blogger friends. Diana is a blogger at The Neon Factor based in Houston, and Devoreaux is a blogger at The Prep Pursuit based in Dallas.

We each decided to share looks in landmark locations to our respective cities! Check out their amazing looks below!

San Antonio is famous for its beautiful skyline, and there is no better place to go to see it than the Hays Street Bridge. The Hays Street Bridge has become very popular over the last few years. They host different events like yoga, bike riding, mixers, and make the perfect place for pictures of downtown San Antonio. Overalls have been around for as long as I can remember, and they aren’t going away anytime soon.  Denim isn’t usually included in my summer look-book because it’s so hot, but these denim overalls are an outfit for the summer time, especially with this Texas heat. I love this distressed style and love that they’re versatile.  You can wear them casual during the day or dress them up for the night. I paired the overalls with a black tank top and accessorized with a taupe fedora to block out the sun during the day. This is definitely a summer outfit to beat the Texas heat and still be trendy at the same time while exploring everything the city has to offer!

We each decided to share looks in landmark locations to our respective cities! Which is why you may recognize the Margaret Hunt Hill bridge in the background of my shots! Now it’s hot here in Dallas… And I don’t mean warm, I mean steaming hot! One of my favorite summer accessories is a parasol guard the flaming sun waves beating down. I love this dress, featuring a tropical palm tree print! It’s summery and vibrant, and makes me feel like I’m on a tropical location – even if I’m home here in Dallas!

In the heart of Houston’s downtown area you’ll find Buffalo Bayou Park. It’s a gorgeous park that people gather from around the city for their daily bike rides, exercise, or to just soak in some sun. The floral print of the skirt goes beautifully with the background. Houston gets extremely hot in the summer so the glass gets slightly dry but the flowers still bloom in the heat. And as I love bright bold colors I couldn’t help but add these fabulous metallic colors. I wear this jacket year round in different ways. Some nude cage sandals to finish the look and I’m off to enjoy the beautiful city of Houston.

Photoshoot contest

Hello again, loves!

Sorry it has been a while, working for Disney has me busy, busy, busy!

A few months ago I won a photo-shoot contest for a local photographer in San Antonio ‘Laura D Photography’. Laura was looking for models of all ages, with no modeling experience what so ever to help her expand her photography clientele. Three winners would be chosen – one for a portrait session, one for couples/engagement sessions, and one for a family session, you would also receive one complimentary photo shoot session, as well as an on set makeup artist, who would do your makeup for you the day of your photo-shoot.

Out of all the people who inquired and for the contest, I was one of the people chosen as a model! I was of course, so excited because I haven’t done a photo-shoot since I was taking pictures for my Quince invitations/party. Of course, being an aspiring fashion blogger, I knew not only would this photo-shoot help me be taken more seriously by companies and people in the world of Fashion but it would also benefit Laura by gaining new clientele from my followers on Instagram.

I accepted the photo-shoot opportunity, and we started texting and planned on a date and time when we could get together and start shooting. We did a lot of brainstorming and planning out details through text such as what we thought a good location would be and also a good theme for it. Once, we set a theme [Boho Chic] I stared shopping around and looking at different boutiques and stores. We decided that we would shoot in a outdoorsy area around the time that the sun was setting so the lighting would be perfect, we were both so excited to bring our ideas to life!

I finally received the pictures and I am in AWE over how they came out, so I thought I would share with y’all for those of you who don’t follow me on Instagram just yet 😉

I decided that I wanted to go with an outfit that included a lace up criss-cross top because I thought that it would go with the theme, what I ended up finding while shopping ended up being much better instead, while I was shopping in A’GACI I found a long sleeve, black, dress that ended up having the criss-cross lace up on the chest. Luckily, I found the last size small they had! Usually I get loose fitting dresses in extra small instead of small, but I couldn’t find any extra small dresses and just went with size small instead. I had also noticed that the trend for lace up ballet flats was starting to become a trend as well, and I found a perfect style at Old Navy for only $15. I thought that the lace up flats would compliment the lace up dress chest perfectly. I loved that the dress was black, because it was simple but I knew that I could dress it up with makeup and accessories.

We had decided on doing 2 different outfits for the shoot, and I was completely lost on what to wear for the second outfit change. I went shopping around for a few days and couldn’t find anything that I liked and went with the Nature-Boho theme. One day, however, I was shopping in Charlotte Russe and found a taupe colored wide long sleeve top with details around the forearm cuff area that I thought I could pair perfectly with white simple jeans, a long, gold necklace to compliment the color of the top, and taupe colored booties.

The day of the shoot, I was so excited that the day was finally here ~ time to bring these ideas to life! After school, I went over to Laura’s and her sister Elizabeth did my makeup, she decided to go with a neutral look since we were going with a boho theme and we didn’t want the makeup to conflict with the theme. She contoured my face and added some false natural looking lash extensions, and then we added one of my maroon lipsticks from Stila to finish off the look. We decided to shoot at this park in Grey Forest called Madla Park which has this huge open field of sun flowers and plants and had a beautiful scenery.  I have never been more comfortable with anybody doing a shoot except with my best friend Angelica, but the shoot went so well and I felt like such a natural with Laura. Down below I will post the pictures 🙂

Thanks for reading! Have a great week!

Zelle Boutique Blogger Meet-Up

Yesterday I went to a pop up shop in downtown San Antonio for  Zelle boutique, an online boutique based in San Antonio who got chosen by PopUpSA to have a pop up shop downtown from December 11-19th.

Zelle boutique is owned by 2 twin sisters Michelle and Christine. They started their boutique a little over a year ago and already have a huge following base. You can find them on social media @ShopZelle and find their website at shopzelle.coChristine said although they had a huge online based following, they wanted to interact more with local bloggers. The pop up shop was the perfect opportunity to get us all together in the same place to network and of course do what fashion bloggers love to do, shop!

Right when I walked in I was greeted by the twin sisters and offered snacks that ranged from Macaroons, Poinsetta Punch, a variety of other cookies, and crackers with ham and cheese. The shop was set up so cute and artsy, you would think that they were permanently housed out of this location with the way everything was so beautifully set up. One thing I loved most about the decor is that most of it was hand made, Christine told me that shes very into crafts and she said she made a majority of the decorations. The shop was on the river walk with some stairs leading up looking into the shop so Christine made window decorations that were made out of white cone solo cups attached by fishing string and had letters from Urban Outfitters that spelled out “Z-E-L-L-E” as shown behind me in this picture.

The accessories wall was definitely my favorite though with the string lights and the picture frames of different art work. They had a wide range of accessories from different styles of sunnies (one of which I bought), bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and fall accessories such as headbands and scarfs.

IMG_1140.JPG

I love that Zelle caters to everything you could want from all kinds of clothes, accessories, and shoes. They are a shop that offers it all! Many boutiques have very  cute clothes and jewelry but a majority of them are very over priced, I love that Zelles shop is affordable and everything is good quality! I got two tops, sunglasses, and a bracelet for around $5o, which is usually how much I would pay for one shirt at any other boutique!

Sunnies – $15

IMG_1161IMG_1163

I tried on this top and absolutely loved how comfy and versatile it was! I can dress it up or dress it down and accessorize it in anyway. I originally had just purchased the black one but then I thought about it and talked myself into getting both colors because it was so hard for me to decide which color to get! The tops were only $20 which wasn’t bad at all! I think they will definitely be my go-to tops this winter.

Before leaving, I was handed a goodie bag which included free earrings, sunnies, a clutch, a coupon with 20% off my purchase, their business card, and a note pad tat says “Hello Holidays”.

Zelle is the place to shop, with two amazing sisters who are sharing their passion for fashion with all their products, they are so caring and easy to talk to and they love to talk fashion with you! One thing that really stuck with me was when Christine told me that they own this shop as a hobby, they aren’t trying to just make a profit from it but they truly care about their customer relationships and making people happy! If you’re in the San Antonio area be sure to check out their pop up shop until December 19th at 140 E. Houston St. Suite 40 , San Antonio, Tx 78249. Even if you aren’t in the San Antonio area I recommend you check their trendy shop out online, I’m sure you will fall in love with their collection!

Thats all for now, follow me on social media at @itsxoxoloriallison to keep up with what I’m doing and on snapchat @xoxoloriallison

Happy Holidays!
