Brunch with Lori – The Funkadelic

Happy Wednesday Brunch Lovers and welcome to another Brunch with Lori post.Β I hope everyone is having a great week so far, we are halfway to the weekend πŸ™‚

A while back while visiting Austin for one of the many times, I went to brunch with some of my girlfriends at The Funkadelic. I found out about this place through Yelp, seriously the BEST app for all foodies! There is so much you can do on the app but that is a whole other blog posts worth. The name The Funkadelic was what caught my attention first and foremost but once I looked at pictures of the food I knew we had to check it out!

When we arrived at The Funkadelic, there was a line outside the door so I got a little nervous because we were all already so hungry and also still had to drive back home after we ate. Once we got out of the car we realized the long line was to order and not people waiting for a table so we decided to stay in line. While we waited, there was a worker outside talking to customers and handing out menu’s for us to look at while we waiting to order inside. There were a lot of local people in line along with someΒ  Austin visitors, like us. The restaurant is not very big so tables fill up fast after you order your food but the workers are very accommodating to finding you a table in a timely manner. They also do have additional seating at the Stouthaus Coffee Pub right next door.

The Funkadelic is located on South Lamar Blvd in Sunset Valley, TX which is in South Austin, TX. They serve brunch 7 days a week from 7:30am-3:30pm. Their slogan is “Brunch for the Masses”. One thing I also learned about them is that they offer cooking classes several times a month! If you live in Austin, I would definitely check out theirΒ  cooking classes!

Their menu allows you to try different kinds of international brunch comfort cuisines, ranging from Migas, Pupusas, and of course, your traditional pancakes and waffles with their own little flare. One thing I love about this restaurant and many other Austin eateries is that they use ingredients from local farms and vendors and everything is made from scratch. They have gluten free options as well as vegan and vegetarian options. You can also eat there or order to go.

I ordered the Braised Citrus Pork Carnitas with a pancake on the side. Let me tell you, these carnitas were probably the best I have ever had! They had the perfect hint of lime and all the ingredients flowed so well together and tasted so good! The tacos were stuffed to the max and so filling, I barley had enough room to eat the pancake especially because it was so big but it so delicious, as well!

My friends and I got the Bison Quesadillas to share, yummy!

My friends and I all got something different andΒ  of course had to go around trying each others! We also tried the Chips & Queso,Β  The Hash Scramble & Miguelito’s Pupusas (not pictured).Β  We were SO satisfied and happy with everything we ordered and how amazing the food was! All the workers were so nice and friendly as well, while waiting in line, many gave us suggestions on what items they liked and what were their favorites. Another thing I also loved about the Funkadelic is that the owners were working in the restaurant and helping out with anything they need to keep the busy brunch rush running smoothly. The owner and his wife even came by our table and brought us all of our food after putting the finishing garnish touchings on each plate. I feel like you really don’t see owners present at restaurants so that was really nice to see. I truly loved the atmosphere and everything about this place! I definitely want to stop by again the next time I’m in Austin to try more items from the menu! I 100% recommend this place and hope everyone gets to try it if you live in Austin or are just visiting, be sure to add it to your list!

I had a long weekend in Austin, filled with many fun activities and wanted to wear something comfortable to brunch so I went with this outfit pictured above. I found this cute red and white striped skort, yes you read that right, skort (I haven’t worn one since I was a little girl) at Forever 21 and knew I had to get it! I paired it with a black off shoulder body suit that I also got at Forever 21 and some black strappy sandals that I got at Target. Perfect, cute but comfortable brunch outfit!

Brunch with Lori – Magnolia Pancake Haus

Happy Monday and welcome to another Brunch with Lori post! Yesterday I went to brunch at Magnolia Pancake Haus in the medical center with my mother. Magnolia Pancake Haus is a very well known breakfast restaurant in San Antonio, best known for their famous buttermilk pancakes.

Magnolia Pancake Haus serves breakfast and lunch and is open Monday-Friday from 7am to 2pm. There are two locations in San Antonio: one in the Medical Center off Huebner and the other off of Embassy Oaks.  The most popular time for both locations is on the weekends, causing  the wait time to be around an hour or more.

Pro Tip: You can add your name to the wait list through the Yelp app without being present at the resturant and it will update you on your place in line as well as when to arrive at the restaurant. If you arrive prior to your table being ready, there is a large outdoor seating area to sit and chill while you wait.

This is one of my favorite things about the Magnolia Pancake Haus – the outdoor waiting area. If you walk around towards the back of the restaurant you will see lots of greenery and down the stairs there is a little section with picnic tables and live music. There is also an outdoor bar out behind the restaurant where you can go and grab a mimosa or your drink of choice while waiting for your table to be ready. They offer a drink of the week as well as your normal brunch alcoholic favorites. The outdoor patio out back provides a nice relaxing area and a lot of shade to beat the Texas heat (if you go in the summer). It is seriously the cutest little area and has so many great vibes with the live music and ambiance.

The Magnolia Pancake Haus’s menu includes all your favorite breakfast options with their own unique spin on them. They offer so many flavorful topping options for pancakes, french toast, and waffles. If you are not a fan of any of those options, they also have many more options as well. While waiting for our table, my mom and I definitely built up a large appetite. My mom ordered The Magnolia Breakfast Plate with Pancakes and I ordered the Farmer’s Scramble with French Toast.

You can view the menu prior to going to the restaurant here.

Also got mimosas and they came with a cute little personal champagne bottle and a glass of orange juice, so cute!

The Magnolia Pancake Haus has an amazing ambiance, great service, and delicious food. It is no wonder why it is such a popular breakfast spot here in San Antonio. Although it is known to have a long wait time, don’t let that make you not want to stop by and visit. The outdoor patio alone helps the wait time be less stressful as well as an enjoyable experience to sit and relax while spending time with family and friends. The menu offers a wide array of so many delicious options that there is something for everyone. I definitely recommend visiting The Magnolia Pancake Haus to local San Antonioan’s and visitors. You will not be disappointed!

I have been loving summer dresses lately and this is one of my favorites! Midi dresses are great for short girls like me (I am 5’2) because they are the perfect length, not too long & not too short. I got this dress at Old Navy a couple of months ago and I immediately was attracted to the color because its not a color I have a lot of in my closet. Since it is a midi dress, I didn’t want it to make me look shorter, so I paired it with cognac booties I purchased from Charlotte Russe. To compliment the booties, I accessorized with my tube purse from Forever 21 and my abalone earrings from Kendra Scott to dress up the look.

Brunch with Lori – Nola Brunch & Beignets

Happy Sunday ladies & gents!

I am a huge lover of brunch and discovering new restaurants and eateries in my city and new cities I travel to. I wanted to share my love of food and brunch by introducing a new blog post to my blog – Brunch with Lori. In these posts I will be sharing a new & loved brunch places that I visit during my free time.

Today I visited the cutest little brunch spot off of N St. Mary’s Street and King’s Court Street in San Antonio called Nola Brunch & Beignets. I haven’t been to New Orleans yet, but I have heard that this place’s great food is inspired by New Orleans. They brunch Tuesday-Sunday from 8 am to 2 pm.

Nola’s ambiance is very friendly and inviting with it being located in a cozy remodeled house. Since it is located in a busy strip of San Antonio, it is difficult to find parking since it is in the middle of a neighborhood, however you should be able to find parking alongside the sidewalks in front of the houses/buildings. Right when you walk in, you are greeted by the hostess who will check you on their reservation list and register you by phone number. You can either sit out in front of the restaurant and socialize with your friends/family or enjoy the different bars along the St. Mary’s Strip while you wait.

The menu is filled with traditional brunch/breakfast dishes but with their own New Orleans twist. Some items that caught my eye were the Bread Pudding French Toast, the Banana Foster Buttermilk Pancakes, the Creole Fried Steak, and the Chicken & Beignets. I decided to order the Chicken & Beignets because I like a balance between sweet and savory and I must say I was not disappointed!

The plate came with 4 chicken tender pieces and two Beignets – since I had never tried beignets before the waiter gave me one regular beignet and one seasonal beignet, which was a beignet filled with churro syrup. Omg it was delicious! I loved both beignets because they weren’t too sweet and definitely balanced out my plate for sweet part of the sweet & savory I wanted.

My boyfriend decided to get the Cajun Boudin Chilaquiles – those were amazing as well! The usually just come as a small plate, but our waiter was able to upgrade it to a larger plate for him. These were not your traditional chilaquiles, as you can tell but they looked and tasted incredible!

Nolas colorful walls and open lighting made this restaurant so inviting.

I also love how they removed the glass from the windows to make the second room less secluded and love the plants hanging from the top of the window frames.

Bottom picture: Chicken & Beignets

Nola, the restaurant was everything I imagined, it made me so excited/eager to go to the real New Orleans and eat their food!

The food was so unique and delicious, the location was in a great trendy area of San Antonio, and the staff was so great and friendly and offering their recommendations. I definitely want to come back here so I can try the other items on my list and next time, I will be sure to bring my own mimosas to enjoy with the amazing food.

I definitely recommend San Antonio visitors and locals to try this place for brunch – trust me, your tastebuds will not be disappointed!

Thank you for reading this post, I can’t wait for y’all to follow the rest of my brunch journey! Remember to follow me on Instagram and I will see you next time!

Did someone say Acai?

The other day while out exploring downtown San Antonio, I stumbled upon a food truck around the Broadway area across from The Pearl Brewery. From a long day of adventuring, I had become super hungry and decided to check outΒ  β€œRise Up SA”. As many food trucks, the β€œRise Up SA” food truck was very unique and specialize in vegan, organic smoothies and acai bowls.

I had tried acai yogurt before, a few years ago but had never had acai by itself. Needless to say, I was curious to try something from there, I looked over their menu which had many amazing choices and decided to try their AB&J acai bowl. Acai bowls are on the rise and becoming a lot more popular as a food choice, and I can see why.

I love food trucks because everything is always made fresh and the owners are always so friendly and excited to share their unique creations with you.Β  Once my acai bowl was ready, one of the owners brought it out to me and it looked amazingly delicious! I took one big spoonful of it and was blown away with how yummy it was! I was also surprised at how cold it was, almost as if I was eating ice cream, but better. The acai was topped with bananas, strawberries, hemp seeds, and almonds – basically heaven in your mouth!

I ate halfway through the bowl and I felt so full – not the sickly kind of full, but a healthy full! I learned that Acai is a type of berry that comes from South America. and that acai bowls can actually be eaten as a full meal. It was so filling and delicious, it was easily the healthiest and most colorful meal I had ever had. I also paid a reasonable amount of money for all that was given to me, which I loved because I’m usually left wanting more.

If you live in the San Antonio area, be sure to check out Rise Up SA, you can find their exact address on their Instagram and Twitter. The owners were some of the friendliest girls I’ve ever met! Aside from the acai bowls they also make their own juices and smoothies – so there is options for everybody!

If you aren’t in the San Antonio area, be sure to go find a local place near you that sells acai bowls and try one! You definitely will not be disappointed.

Here is another treasure I found while exploring by the Pearl Brewry, I just had to get a picture with it to show how much I love tacos, Texas, and of course the Spurs Coyote!
