Brunch with Lori – The Funkadelic

Happy Wednesday Brunch Lovers and welcome to another Brunch with Lori post. I hope everyone is having a great week so far, we are halfway to the weekend 🙂

A while back while visiting Austin for one of the many times, I went to brunch with some of my girlfriends at The Funkadelic. I found out about this place through Yelp, seriously the BEST app for all foodies! There is so much you can do on the app but that is a whole other blog posts worth. The name The Funkadelic was what caught my attention first and foremost but once I looked at pictures of the food I knew we had to check it out!

When we arrived at The Funkadelic, there was a line outside the door so I got a little nervous because we were all already so hungry and also still had to drive back home after we ate. Once we got out of the car we realized the long line was to order and not people waiting for a table so we decided to stay in line. While we waited, there was a worker outside talking to customers and handing out menu’s for us to look at while we waiting to order inside. There were a lot of local people in line along with some  Austin visitors, like us. The restaurant is not very big so tables fill up fast after you order your food but the workers are very accommodating to finding you a table in a timely manner. They also do have additional seating at the Stouthaus Coffee Pub right next door.

The Funkadelic is located on South Lamar Blvd in Sunset Valley, TX which is in South Austin, TX. They serve brunch 7 days a week from 7:30am-3:30pm. Their slogan is “Brunch for the Masses”. One thing I also learned about them is that they offer cooking classes several times a month! If you live in Austin, I would definitely check out their  cooking classes!

Their menu allows you to try different kinds of international brunch comfort cuisines, ranging from Migas, Pupusas, and of course, your traditional pancakes and waffles with their own little flare. One thing I love about this restaurant and many other Austin eateries is that they use ingredients from local farms and vendors and everything is made from scratch. They have gluten free options as well as vegan and vegetarian options. You can also eat there or order to go.

I ordered the Braised Citrus Pork Carnitas with a pancake on the side. Let me tell you, these carnitas were probably the best I have ever had! They had the perfect hint of lime and all the ingredients flowed so well together and tasted so good! The tacos were stuffed to the max and so filling, I barley had enough room to eat the pancake especially because it was so big but it so delicious, as well!

My friends and I got the Bison Quesadillas to share, yummy!

My friends and I all got something different and  of course had to go around trying each others! We also tried the Chips & Queso,  The Hash Scramble & Miguelito’s Pupusas (not pictured).  We were SO satisfied and happy with everything we ordered and how amazing the food was! All the workers were so nice and friendly as well, while waiting in line, many gave us suggestions on what items they liked and what were their favorites. Another thing I also loved about the Funkadelic is that the owners were working in the restaurant and helping out with anything they need to keep the busy brunch rush running smoothly. The owner and his wife even came by our table and brought us all of our food after putting the finishing garnish touchings on each plate. I feel like you really don’t see owners present at restaurants so that was really nice to see. I truly loved the atmosphere and everything about this place! I definitely want to stop by again the next time I’m in Austin to try more items from the menu! I 100% recommend this place and hope everyone gets to try it if you live in Austin or are just visiting, be sure to add it to your list!

I had a long weekend in Austin, filled with many fun activities and wanted to wear something comfortable to brunch so I went with this outfit pictured above. I found this cute red and white striped skort, yes you read that right, skort (I haven’t worn one since I was a little girl) at Forever 21 and knew I had to get it! I paired it with a black off shoulder body suit that I also got at Forever 21 and some black strappy sandals that I got at Target. Perfect, cute but comfortable brunch outfit!

Brunch with Lori – Magnolia Pancake Haus

Happy Monday and welcome to another Brunch with Lori post! Yesterday I went to brunch at Magnolia Pancake Haus in the medical center with my mother. Magnolia Pancake Haus is a very well known breakfast restaurant in San Antonio, best known for their famous buttermilk pancakes.

Magnolia Pancake Haus serves breakfast and lunch and is open Monday-Friday from 7am to 2pm. There are two locations in San Antonio: one in the Medical Center off Huebner and the other off of Embassy Oaks.  The most popular time for both locations is on the weekends, causing  the wait time to be around an hour or more.

Pro Tip: You can add your name to the wait list through the Yelp app without being present at the resturant and it will update you on your place in line as well as when to arrive at the restaurant. If you arrive prior to your table being ready, there is a large outdoor seating area to sit and chill while you wait.

This is one of my favorite things about the Magnolia Pancake Haus – the outdoor waiting area. If you walk around towards the back of the restaurant you will see lots of greenery and down the stairs there is a little section with picnic tables and live music. There is also an outdoor bar out behind the restaurant where you can go and grab a mimosa or your drink of choice while waiting for your table to be ready. They offer a drink of the week as well as your normal brunch alcoholic favorites. The outdoor patio out back provides a nice relaxing area and a lot of shade to beat the Texas heat (if you go in the summer). It is seriously the cutest little area and has so many great vibes with the live music and ambiance.

The Magnolia Pancake Haus’s menu includes all your favorite breakfast options with their own unique spin on them. They offer so many flavorful topping options for pancakes, french toast, and waffles. If you are not a fan of any of those options, they also have many more options as well. While waiting for our table, my mom and I definitely built up a large appetite. My mom ordered The Magnolia Breakfast Plate with Pancakes and I ordered the Farmer’s Scramble with French Toast.

You can view the menu prior to going to the restaurant here.

Also got mimosas and they came with a cute little personal champagne bottle and a glass of orange juice, so cute!

The Magnolia Pancake Haus has an amazing ambiance, great service, and delicious food. It is no wonder why it is such a popular breakfast spot here in San Antonio. Although it is known to have a long wait time, don’t let that make you not want to stop by and visit. The outdoor patio alone helps the wait time be less stressful as well as an enjoyable experience to sit and relax while spending time with family and friends. The menu offers a wide array of so many delicious options that there is something for everyone. I definitely recommend visiting The Magnolia Pancake Haus to local San Antonioan’s and visitors. You will not be disappointed!

I have been loving summer dresses lately and this is one of my favorites! Midi dresses are great for short girls like me (I am 5’2) because they are the perfect length, not too long & not too short. I got this dress at Old Navy a couple of months ago and I immediately was attracted to the color because its not a color I have a lot of in my closet. Since it is a midi dress, I didn’t want it to make me look shorter, so I paired it with cognac booties I purchased from Charlotte Russe. To compliment the booties, I accessorized with my tube purse from Forever 21 and my abalone earrings from Kendra Scott to dress up the look.

Brunch with Lori – Ocho

Havana, oh na-na! 🎶 That is the song that was going through my head today when I visited Ocho.

Happy Sunday Brunch Lovers! Today I finally had the pleasure of visiting Ocho, a little restaurant in Hotel Havana located in downtown San Antonio and along the Riverwalk. If you’ve never heard of this restaurant, I’m pretty positive that you have seen pictures taken here. The blue hues and glass conservatory are iconic and make for such great photos and a Spanish ambiance. (Fun Fact: Did you know Kendra Scott took her catalog pictures here for her Summer ’18 collection here? Check it out here.)

Visiting Ocho and Hotel Havana as a whole truly make you forget that you are even in San Antonio, it feels like you have traveled outside of Texas and gone somewhere of Latin decent, which I feel is one of the things that truly makes this place unique.

Ocho serves breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, and late night snacks. You can enjoy their brunch menu Saturday and Sunday from 10pm-2pm. Another really great thing they offer, is being able to book a reservation online through Open Table directly through this link. I definitely recommend making a reservation if there are going to be more than 2 people in your party, that way their staff is ready for you and has your table set. My best friend Tessa joined me for brunch and we were definitely not disappointed.

Menu:

Now for the yummy stuff, their menu! Ocho offers dishes of Cuban, Mexican, and Texan influence, they provide their own delicious twist on traditional brunch dishes.

Being that their were so many delicious options to chose from, I had a tough time deciding what to order. I was in between ordering the Fideo Loco and the Bolillo French Toast, both of these are some of my favorite dishes! I decided to order the Fideo Loco because I feel that Fideo is not a common brunch item on menus (I definitely plan on going back to try their French Toast). Tessa ordered the Cuban Hash and Eggs, which looked amazing! Both of our dishes were so tasty and filling.

The Fiedo included – 2 Poached Eggs, Sopa de Fideo, Pinto Beans, Chorizo, Bacon, Chicharrón Crumble, Pico de Gallo, Cilantro, Queso Fresco, Chile Toreado, Fresh Griddled Tortillas.
I was so happy with my decision to get the Fideo and loved that they included in there, I have a thing for poached eggs in my food. I truly feel like the eggs added a different but tasteful flavor to the typical Fideo Loco many are used to.

The Cuban Hash and Eggs included Р2 Fried Eggs, Cuban Style Pulled Pork, Roasted Potato, Sweet Pepper Sofrito, Diced Ham, Dijon Aioli, Swiss Cheese, Diced Escab̬ch.

Ocho is located at a hotel, so there is a designated parking area for hotel guests – the parking lot is a little but narrow (don’t say I didn’t warn you, thank god for backup cameras) but if that parking lot fills up, you can also find parallel parking along the sidewalk behind the hotel. For those who don’t know or are visiting, Sundays are a great day to visit downtown San Antonio because parking along the street is free all day, so you will not have to pay the meters.

Although it was my first time at Hotel Havana and Ocho, it will definitely not be my last. I plan on going back to try more items from their brunch menu, but also plan on trying some of their dinner menu as well. I recommend this place 100% if you are looking to brunch with your friends/family and are wanting brunch but with a Latin twist. Ocho also offers a Happy Hour from 3pm-6pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, & Friday and all day on Thursday.

Outfit Details:

Today was a warm and sunny day here in San Antonio, so it was only right to show some leg and bring out this romper. Since I knew Ocho provided some Latin vibes, I was inspired by the red dress woman 💃🏻 emoji and decided to wear one of my favorite rompers from Forever 21. I love this romper because it is so complimenting with the ruffles along the shorts and the sleeves. I feel like everyone needs a great red piece in their wardrobe to feel like a “spicy mami, hot tamale”. I paired this romper with some of my favorite wedges from Sam Edelman and a simple but necessary Debra choker from Kendra Scott.

Disclaimer: I promise you, I steamed this romper before putting it on, but magically on the drive over to the restaurant I wrinkled it up by sitting down😅

For my work holiday party, I found the Sequin Fringe Midi Dress from Forever 21 which was absolutely perfect for the occasion because the theme was Roaring 20’s/Gatsby theme. I absolutely loved the dress and feel like I can wear it again for New Years Eve as well.

I wanted to give a little bit of options for this post since I know not many people are crazy about sequins so I also added some pieces that are fitting for the occasion but not too flashy. I also kept it on the affordable side because you don’t always have to break the bank to look good and be dressed for the occasion. I also wanted to share items that weren’t just online but in store because this weekend is a perfect time for last minute shopping for that perfect NYE outfit!

Thanks for reading! I hope y’all had a wonderful Christmas and have an even better New Years Eve! Keep up with my life by following me on Instagram.
